The ninth edition of the annual report surfaces insights, challenges and priorities from more than 1,100 executives.

Where we were is not where we are today – or even where we hoped we might be at this point. The nuances of the digital workplace, shifting expectations and the current wave of generative AI technologies continue to make the digital workplace a dynamic arena.”
— Sarah Kimmel, VP of Research, SMG/Reworked

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, USA, July 10, 2024 Reworked, Simpler Media Group’s leading native digital publication that covers the r/evolution of work and the digital workplace, announced today the release of its latest original research report, The 2024 State of the Digital Workplace. The report provides an authoritative portrait of the current digital workplace challenges, opportunities and technology priorities. It also takes a special look at the impact of generative AI (genAI) on the digital workplace.

This is the ninth annual report of its kind, and the findings reflect the survey results from more than 1,100 enterprise-level digital workplace executives and practitioners who submitted their responses in the first half of 2024. The report highlights the current state of the digital workplace, offers insight into what’s next and explores how companies are navigating the age of artificial intelligence, among other trends and pressures.

Key takeaways from the report include:

  • Nearly two thirds (65%) of organizations say the digital workplace is a critical or high priority, up 2% from last year.
  • The two most frequently mentioned strategic priorities are “digitization and automation,” and “AI tool adoption,” with the latter more than tripling from 12% to 39% in the past year.
  • Satisfaction with tools remains a challenge, with less than a third of respondents feeling different tools are “working well” on average.

In the introduction to the report, SMG’s CEO Brice Dunwoodie wrote, “The latest digital workplace disruptor is generative AI, and inevitably, this is reflected in the latest State of the Digital Workplace report.” He went on to explain, “It’s still an extremely fast-moving area, and the experiences of early adopters are overwhelmingly positive so far. But it’s still in the early stages, and while the current feelings are optimistic, we see cause for sobriety and a balanced pacing of investments.”

In addition, SMG’s VP of Research, Sarah Kimmel, commented, “The workplace is changing. But where we were even just a year ago is not where we are today – or even where we hoped we might be at this point. The nuances of the digital workplace and identifying ownership of the initiatives make it a challenge.” She continued, “But it’s essential to understand that the digital workplace encompasses all digital touch points and enables hybrid remote work arrangements.”
